Infectious disease outbreaks often reveal weaknesses in health systems that receive limited attention between crises. The ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, together with cross-border transmission into Uganda, has accelerated regional and international collaboration.

The ongoing Ebola virus disease outbreak caused by Bundibugyo virus (Orthoebolavirus bundibugyoense; BDBV) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has created additional regional concerns following cross-border transmission into Uganda.

The outbreak has brought together governments, regional and multilateral organizations, manufacturers, research institutions, and financing partners to strengthen the response.

Development of medical countermeasures accelerated

In response to the outbreak, partners are accelerating the development, evaluation, and deployment of medical countermeasures (MCMs).

These efforts include diagnostics, vaccines, therapeutics, and personal protective equipment (PPE) designed to support outbreak detection, protect health workers, and improve the ability of health systems to respond rapidly to Ebola transmission.

Outbreaks can expose gaps that remain largely overlooked between crises, including weaknesses in diagnostic capacity, health-worker protection, access to vaccines and therapeutics, and emergency preparedness.

The response to the BDBV outbreak could therefore provide valuable lessons for strengthening preparedness and building faster, more coordinated responses to future Ebola outbreaks and other high-risk infectious disease threats.
